Experiential Movement Therapy

This is a system of workshops exploring the many ways the body stores knowledge, trauma, and addiction. Research shows that treatment for trauma and addiction needs to incorporate mindful breathwork and physical movement.

These workshops around a five-step process:

  1. I Am: The first workshop focuses on self-awareness and grounding. Andrew introduces participants to a morning practice that includes exercises, breathing techniques, and therapeutic movement. The goal is for individuals to find their center, clear their minds, and set intentions for the day.

  2. You Are: Once participants have established their own center, this session helps them relate to others. It involves trust exercises and exploring different energies, like push, pull, forgive, and allow, through hands-on activities. This step emphasizes trust, boundaries, and interdependence.

  3. Mapping the Journey: In this session, participants sculpt three key memories from their lives, helping them connect with their body's stored memories. They draw these experiences and use them to map out their journey, discussing where they want to go next in their lives.

  4. Creative Process: Andrew integrates the creative process as a means of healing. Participants explore the grammar of movement through space, time, and weight. They choreograph movements and work together in groups, creating compositions that reflect concepts like recovery or joy.

  5. Joy Bonding: The final workshop focuses on finding and cultivating joy. He calls this “Joy Bonding” as opposed to “Trauma Bonding.” Andrew leads exercises where participants identify where they find joy in their bodies and connect it to specific activities. They share these joyful movements with the group, creating a bonding experience. Creating a bonding experience establishes community, and community is opposite of trauma.
